RARE- Biblical Roman Herodian Jerusalem style oil lamp
Aweidah Gallery is pleased to offer this extremely RARE ancient biblical Roman Herodian black clay oil lamp, nicely made in the shape of a pomegranate with a ridge around the shoulders and beautifully shaped nozzle. "Known as the Jerusalem style oil lamp". Three circles above two concentric circles on the nozzle, rim around filling hole

Dated from, 37 BC - 70 AD "Time of Jesus and King Herod the great"

To hold this lamp in our hands is to feel the touch of some ancient hand upon it, to imagine forgotten corridors spring to life with its passing glow and then fade one more into darkness

Spatulated nozzle - Bottom: flat - with a large banded loop handle.

JERUSALEM LAMPS; The main characteristic of these lamps is the black clay of which they are made. These lamps were fired without OXYGEN, thus producing the black colour; they are well-made and are of high quality. This special type is found mainly in Judaea, especially in the vicinity of Jerusalem, The few analyses of the materials used to make these lamps reveal that they were manufactured in the area of Jerusalem.

Measurements: Length: 11 cm - Width: 6.5 cm

Condition: Some professional repair hard to see as shown in the pictures

Found near Jerusalem, Holy Land
