RARE - Ancient Egyptian Amethyst Scarab seal
An authentic ancient Egyptian Amethyst scarab seal (RARE)

Canaanite, Middle Kingdom, 2nd Intermediate period, C. 1750 – 1570 BC

The flat underside of this scarab is plain without decoration as detailed in "The Scarab, A reflection of Ancient Egypt" The Israel Museum, Jerusalem (see page 41).

Amethyst:
A purple variety of transparent quartz, occurring in the veins of rocks from Eastern desert. This stone was already in use in the Predynastic period, but was popular mainly in the Middle Kingdom. Many Amethyst scarabs of that period are known, most with a plain base. A few amethyst scarabs from the New Kingdom have also been recorded

The scarab (kheper) beetle was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt because the insect was a symbol of the sun god Re.

Dimensions: Length: 1.7 cm - Width: 1.2 cm

Condition: Good condition with natural patina, untouched as found

Found in Israel

Scarab: In the form of a beetle, these amulets were very popular throughout Egypt’s history. The scarab beetle was associated with the life-giving and ever-present sun because of its activities. They were carved from faience, gems, stone and semi-precious stones.
