Wheel-made type. It has a circular reservoir and a projecting nozzle, with a gradual upward slope. After the reservoir was made on the wheel, a hand-formed nozzle was stuck on. Loop handle higher than the rim. The clay is reddish- brown.

Measurements: Height: 5.5 – Length: 9 cm – Width: 6 cm

Condition: Minor ancient hair-line crack on one side as shown otherwise intact and in very good condition

This lamp reveals Mesopotamian influence, and in fact a related wheelmade lamp had a long istory in Mesopotamia. The same type also occurs in Cyprus, suggesting that the lamp’s appearance in Israel was not connected with political events, such as the Persian conquest in A.D 614, but as a result of trade connections.

Several lamps as this were found in Byzantine houses in the latest occupation layers. It was generally assumed that like several towns in Palestine was abandoned in the course of the Arab conquest which would date the latest occupation to the first half of the seventh Century.
