The phiale was the standard wine drinking vessel of the Persian world, its antecedents can be seen as far back as the 8th century BC. In areas of cross cultural contact between the Greeks and Persians in Asia Minor and Thrace, the phiale was also adopted.

Phiale is the term used to describe Ancient Greek Libation Bowls. A Phiale was used to pour libation (a liquid offering) onto an altar, in dedication to the Gods. The libation was often a scented liquid, which, when poured onto the charcoal-lit altar, created a sizzling eruption of sweet-smelling smoke. This smoke rose to the heavens, in a manner consistent with its dedication to the Gods.
